College Students Take Longer to Recover from a Concussion

It takes 7-14 days to recover from a concussion. Researchers questioned if it takes longer in college students who find it difficult to find time to recover.

In scenario C, which affects 30-40% of patients we screen, nerve transfer surgery should be avoided outside of the first 6 months post-injury due to detrimental impact of chronic muscle denervation on recipient muscle targets. However, reconstruction by tendon transfer may be considered.

The Journal of Neurophysiology recently published a review by Adenike Adewuyi, MD PhD — a 2022 graduate of Shirley Ryan AbilityLab’s physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) residency program — and her mentor, Colin Franz, MD, PhD, physician-scientist, at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab. The review defines a clinical framework for evaluating patients with spinal cord injuries to determine their candidacy for nerve transfer surgery.

Locomotor function following transcutaneous electrical spinal cord stimulation in individuals with hemiplegic stroke

Despite advances in stroke rehabilitation, more than two-thirds of the 7 million stroke survivors in the U.S. still struggle to walk independently in their communities. Most current therapies focus on stimulating the brain areas that control leg movement, yet many stroke survivors continue to face issues like poor coordination, spasticity, and muscle weakness. We propose a different approach—using electrical stimulation of the spinal cord to improve walking after stroke. This study is looking for persons who have had a stroke to determine if spinal stimulation helps improve walking ability.
