About Me
Matt has been with Shirley Ryan AbilityLab for over a decade. He started as a Spanish interpreter, which gave him the chance to see the full spectrum of care at what was then Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC) through the eyes of both patients and clinicians. Now, he is the Director for Global Patient Services, where he oversees the operations of a department responsible for addressing the unique care and logistical needs of patients who travel to us from other states and countries. He is also co-investigator on a study about best practices for interpreting for patients with aphasia. He has a BA in Latin American history from the University of Chicago and an MA in Translation and Interpreting from the University of Illinois. He also continues to train healthcare interpreters and both interpret and coordinate language access at conferences and meetings in Chicago and beyond. He is a published literary translator who translated a book of short stories from Honduras and is fluent in Spanish and conversant in Portuguese.
