Shirley Ryan AbilityLab senior biostatistician Manasi Sheth, PhD, is the newest editorial board member of Topics in Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation, the official journal of the American Spinal Injury Association. The journal is a leading resource for clinical, peer-reviewed information for spinal cord care teams, including physiatrists, physical and occupational therapists, rehabilitation nurses, psychologists, neurologists and orthopedists. Sheth will review manuscripts and participate in editorial board meetings to ensure the growth and scientific rigor of the journal. She will serve a two-year term.

Sheth has worked on several projects for the Center for Rehabilitation Outcomes Research and with other labs and departments within Shirley Ryan AbilityLab including research on the prescription of naloxone in rehabilitation hospitals, the association between spasticity and motor recovery in patients with incomplete spinal cord injury, and measurement errors in patient-reported outcomes.
Before joining Shirley Ryan AbilityLab in January, 2023, Sheth was a mathematical statistician at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration where she served as a recognized expert in statistical methodology, primarily for diagnostic medical devices in the Center for Devices and Radiological Health and in the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. Prior to her work with the FDA, Sheth was an assistant professor in the School of Community and Environmental Health and the Center for Global Health at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia.
Sheth has also worked as a biostatistician with the Center for Global Health and Community and Environmental Health in the College of Health Sciences at Old Dominion University where she was responsible for applying intermediate and advanced statistical techniques to improve data collection, data analysis, and interpret research results. She also supervised and mentored undergraduate and graduate students, implemented statistical analyses for a variety of health research projects and assisted in the development of graduate student research proposals.
Sheth has made many major contributions to the field of statistical analysis and has authored or co-authored numerous papers and book chapters.
Sheth holds a PhD in computational and applied mathematics with an emphasis on statistics and a master’s degree in statistics from Old Dominion University. She holds bachelor’s degrees in biochemistry and applied mathematics as well as a master’s degree in applied mathematics from Loyola University, Chicago.
