NIH’s mission is to seek fundamental knowledge about the nature and behavior of living systems and the application of that knowledge to enhance health, lengthen life, and reduce illness and disability. This resource listing of all the many areas that National Institute of Health governs and takes care of to help people live healthy lives.

The National Institutes of Health is made up of 27 different components called Institutes and Centers. Each has its own specific research agenda, often focusing on particular diseases or body systems.
Examples are listed below:

1.Genetic and rare disease information center (GARD)

2.The National Institutes of Health’s National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI)
Provides world-wide leadership for research, training, and education programs aimed at the prevention and treatment of heart, lung, and blood diseases and supports the health of all individuals so that they can live their lives to the fullest.

3. Medline Plus Health Information NIH Rehabilitation
The United States National Library of Medicine health information Web site contains accurate, useful information and downloads on a variety of topics such as:

  • Caregivers and Support
  • Disabilities
  • Drug information
  • Health conditions
  • Nutrition and Vitamins
  • Research - links to PubMed and abstracts to the medical literature

Includes a medical encyclopedia and medical dictionary

4.National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH)
Part of the National Institutes of Health in the Department of Health and Human Service whose mission is to support research on complementary and integrative medicine, to train researchers, and to disseminate information to the public.
The center's research also encourages self–care methods that support healthier lifestyles and uncovers potential usefulness and safety issues of natural products. The practices and products studied by the center are prioritized by four guiding principles: scientific promise, amenability to be studied using the highest quality research methods, use by the American public, and the potential impact on public health.

5.National Center for Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD)
The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) conducts and supports research and research training on normal and disordered communication processes, including diseases affecting hearing, balance, taste, smell, voice, speech, and language. Type in a word in the search box in the upper right-hand corne to locate a topics you are interested in learning about.
