Project: Wearable diaphragmatic efficiency monitoring technologies towards in-home respiratory monitoring of people with cervical spinal cord injury

Dr. Töreyin is an associate professor in the department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the director of the Smart Biomedical Systems Laboratory at San Diego State University, having previously served as an assistant professor from 2017 to 2023.  Additionally, he serves as the co-director of the SDSU Rehabilitation Technology Certificate program. Dr. Töreyin earned his PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology.  He also completed postdoctoral training in Electrical and Computer Engineering while at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Dr. Töreyin’s research focuses on electronics design for wearable/implantable biomedical systems and developing physical-computation electronics for applications with limited computational and power budgets. Throughout his Ph.D., he developed an ultra-low power processor for a vestibular prosthetic device. In his postdoctoral studies, he focused on creating a wearable system for joint health monitoring during the post-injury rehabilitation period. More recently, he and his research team have been working on designing high-sensitivity bio signal detection electronics for implantable brain and heart monitoring applications. The C-STAR support will allow him to assess the viability of a convenient sensor system for consistently monitoring diaphragmatic efficiency. This collaborative project with Dr. Henry York, M.D., at the Spinal Cord Injury Service of VA San Diego will serve as the initial phase towards enabling respiratory monitoring for individuals with cervical spinal cord injuries, both in-home and within the community. Beyond his academic pursuits, he enjoys surfing and spending leisure time at the beach.
