For a remarkable fourth time in the past six years, the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab Blackhawks are champions of the National Hockey League Sled Hockey Classic!
The Shirley Ryan AbilityLab Blackhawks claimed the Tier I title at a tournament in Wayne, N.J., hosted by the NHL's New Jersey Devils, Nov. 18–21.
The victorious Shirley Ryan AbilityLab Blackhawks team includes three members of the men's Paralympic gold-medal-winning U.S. National Sled Team (Travis Dodson, Rico Roman and Kevin McKee) and the captain of the U.S. Women’s National Sled Hockey Team (Erica Mitchell McKee).
Leading the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab Blackhawks as head coach is our very own Derek Daniels, director, Adaptive Sports & Fitness, Volunteer Services and Therapeutic Recreation; and team manager Bob Roybal, father of decorated sled hockey player and Adaptive Sports program alumni Brody Roybal.
To honor the winning team, the names of every player on the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab Blackhawks will be engraved on the Sled Hockey Classic trophy, and the trophy will be displayed at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto.
