Individuals are chosen for this honor based on their service and leadership in the ORS organization, and their achievements, thought leadership and contributions to the field of musculoskeletal research.

Dr. Lieber has been a member of ORS since 1985, serving in multiple roles as a volunteer, educational program faculty member and legislative advocate. From 2008–2010, he was a member of the ORS Board of Directors. His research has been featured at scores of ORS meetings. And, Dr. Lieber has received ORS's Kappa Delta Award — the society's highest honor — on two separate occasions.

“I personally have known Dr. Lieber for many years and it was my honor and privilege to nominate him as a 2021 Fellow of the Orthopedic Research Society,” said ORS president Susan Chubinskaya, PhD. “He is a pioneer, and a nationally and internationally recognized authority in the field of muscle physiology whose contributions are hard to overestimate. He is my role model as a researcher, who also happened to have an infectious smile and a great sense of humor. I am very happy that the ORS has been able to demonstrate our appreciation for everything Dr. Lieber has done for the society and the orthopedic field. Congratulations Richard!”
