DESCRIPTION: From the first moment a stroke is suspected it is a race for time and an unending sea of numbers. Laboratory values, centimeters or millimeters, medication dosages, test scores, age, intensity and of course, minutes and hours. But what do all these numbers truly mean for the healthcare professional and the patient.

This course will examine how numbers play a role in our diagnosis, assessment, intervention and prognosis. From the importance of the last known time of wellness, to how age and gender play a role in prognosis and recovery. Through the translation of key laboratory values and medication dosing we will determine the potential impact of a patient’s performance on any given day. A panel of young stroke survivors will provide insight into their journey and redefine their new normal. We will examine how to best interpret and connect all of these numbers for improved education to our patients and their families. Finally, we will discuss how to step away from the numbers to view our patient’s performance to guide goal setting.

LEARNER OUTCOMES: Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to: 

• Identify patients appropriate for high intensity therapeutic interventions (i.e., gait training, upper limb, aphasia and swallowing)
• Summarize disparities in terms of gender, race and ethnicity for patients who have had a stroke
• Interpret how certain lab values and medication dosing can impact a patient’s performance
• Generate patient-centered goals for return to school, work and/or community for a younger patient who has had a stroke
• Discriminate between objective and subjective assessment components to create a holistic plan of care in patients who have sustained a stroke
• Explain the benefits of group therapy in stroke rehabilitation across the age range from an outcome basis and psychosocial aspect

SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION: To successfully complete this course, participants will need to attend the live activity, complete all self-study work, attest to your attendance each day and complete an evaluation at the conclusion of the course through the Academy Learning Portal. Self-study work will be available on Monday, April 1, 2024. All course work, including self-study work and the online evaluation must be completed by Friday, May 10, 2024.
