Z Updates in Neuroscience: How Therapy Changes the Brain

Description: The human brain is a remarkably plastic organ – changed by experience and selectively pruned with disuse throughout our lives. This webinar will cover the newest research on how therapy drives neuroplastic change, especially after brain injury. The webinar will distinguish between what is understood about natural and therapeutically driven recovery processes. Research on the effects of therapy on sensory and motor function, perceptual skills, speech, language and cognition will be emphasized. The course is designed as a practical guide for clinicians to develop evidenced based intervention approaches for their patients.

Objectives: Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe new brain plasticity research on how therapy changes the human brain
  • Identify how the new research impacts timing of treatment to coincide with natural recovery processes
  • Generalize the new research for goal setting in PT, OT and Speech
  • Recognize how the new research on treatment intensity and frequency applies to select adjunctive evidence-based technological interventions
