Z Swallowing Issues in Patients with Spinal Cord Injury

Description: While we don’t often consider it in our daily lives, swallowing involves a great deal of strength and coordination of the mechanisms involved, and both can be significantly impacted by a spinal cord injury. This webinar will provide an overview of the basic anatomy/physiology of the swallowing mechanism, with focus on the impact of swallowing impairments on those with spinal cord injuries. While such deficits are usually the focus of SLPs, discussion will also address the impact of swallowing difficulties on various other aspects of an individual’s rehabilitation, including the various other disciplines involved.

Objectives: Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe basic principles of anatomy and physiology of the swallowing mechanism.
  • Identify common causes of swallowing difficulties in patients with spinal cord injuries (SCI).
  • Describe consequences/complications of swallowing issues in patients with SCI.
  • Explain basic rationale for potential interventions used for difficulty swallowing in patients with SCI.
