DESCRIPTION: 

Cerebral palsy continues to be the number one childhood disability. With varying presentations for each diagnosis, professionals often come across more complex cases that can be challenging to work through. We will take a deep dive into the rehabilitation of individuals with complex cerebral palsy and the approach to take for different abilities and skills. The traditional definition of complex care involves an individual with a diagnosis, and additional medical complications that impact function, care, and comfort in a unique way.

This course will discuss issues surrounding these more complex cases and move beyond standard care to include those cases that don’t always have straightforward treatment options. Complex can encompass the individual who is unable to manage their spasticity impacting function and positioning or focus on individuals who are ambulatory but are unable to manage dystonia, significantly impacting function. The scientific literature for rehabilitation with this population is limited due to the individual nature of their presentation. There is often not a textbook answer to these types of cases when it comes to the best course of action for spasticity management, rehabilitation, equipment and/ or potential orthopedic surgery. The team approach will be emphasized as a critical key to working with these individuals and their families to navigate the system of care.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

• Identify the complexities of impairments that impact structure, function and participation in this population.
• Describe the importance of a team approach required to manage the medical complexities and rehabilitation for this population.
• List 3 strategies to implement 24-hour positioning for patients and families.
• Recognize the individuals that are appropriate for neurosurgical interventions to improve function and participation.
• Identify alternative approaches to spasticity management and how it impacts functional participation.
• Describe the psychological impact this diagnosis has on an individual with CP and how it affects the quality of life for the patient and family.
